Job Summary

Mistawasis Nehiyawak is seeking a competent, confident, motivated individual to fill the position of a Grad Mentor.Academic Coach at Mistawasis Nehiyawak High School, located in Mistawasis Nehiyawak First Nation, Saskatchewan. In this role, under the direction of the School Principal the Grad Mentor/Academic Coach will provide academic support to student inquiries pertaining to course content and course completion for success for Graduation from Mistawasis Nehiyawak High School. This role will counsel students on course selections according to selected educational pathways. The position will prepare letters, memos, and emails daily and converse professionally with students, parents, guardians, teachers and other staff. The position will identify students’ strengths and weaknesses to develop solutions and action plans to promote realistic academic and career goals for student success. Performs administrative practices to maintain updated electronic files and notes on individual students and be able to save relevant links, articles, and other helpful information and data resources in an organized fashion. The Grad Mentor will demonstrate a strong commitment to the planning for improvement process in support of student learning.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop an individual Academic Coaching plan for each student.
  • Meet individually with students’ weekly work on their individual academic plan (such as note taking, time management, test preparation, active studying, social adjustment, coping and stress management.
  • Work with faculty to identify research opportunities on campus for students.
  • Offering peer support, modeling effective learning, and serving as an accountability to other undergraduate students who are participating in the Academic Coaching program.
  • Facilitation of students learning through other duties as assigned, which may include directing students to their tutoring or SI sessions, responding to student questions about services.
  • Participating in trainings as assigned, including pre-semester training and continued trainings and observations throughout the academic year.
  • Facilitating student learning and goal setting in coaching sessions with a growth mindset.
  • Stay updated with educational best practices, innovative teaching methodologies, and resources to continuously improve coaching techniques.

Qualifications

  • Prior experience in academic coaching, teaching, or educational counseling, particularly within an independent school setting.

  • Bachelor of Education Degree and/or equivalent degree would be an asset

  • Adequate and appropriate experience

  • Positive professional/personal attributes

  • Flexibility in the workday is necessary to perform the required duties and responsibilities.

  • A security background check including both a Criminal Record Check and a Vulnerable Sector check will be required

  • Problem Solving Skills

  • Valid Standard First Aid, CPR

  • Knowledge and understanding of First Nation Communities and their culture

Other

  • Must possess a valid Saskatchewan driver’s license and reliable vehicle.

  • Must provide a current, original, Canadian Criminal Record Check (CPIC) with vulnerable sector search, as a condition of employment.
