Job Summary

This position will report directly to the CFO, the Finance Controller is responsible for ensuring financial statements and records are compliance with Canadian General Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), assists with the annual audit, leads financial forecasting, budgeting and reporting, administrative and payroll functions; abides by and enforces all financial administration policies and procedures, as well as other applicable policies and acts, in accordance with Mistawasis Néhiyawak and federal legislation.

The Finance Controller is responsible for overseeing accounting activities and ensuring ledgers accurately reflect money coming in and going out of the First Nation on a timely basis, supervising and mentoring finance staff, assisting the CFO and Senior Management with preparing annual departmental and program budgets and financial reports, overseeing the management of the accounting and payroll systems, and other related duties assigned by the CFO.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of five (5) years experience with full cycle accounting
  • Bachelor’s Degree of Commerce or Business Administration with a major in accounting
  • Experience working in a First Nation organization is a plus
  • CPA-CA, CGA or CMA designation or working towards completion of designation is a plus
  • Must be bondable – a criminal record check and vulnerable sector check will be required

Competencies

  • Knowledge of Canadian GAAP, Accounting Standards for Not-For-Profit Organizations (ASNPO) and Public Sector Accounting (PSA) Standards
  • Ability to verify and analyze data, maintain proper supporting documentation for transactions
  • Capabilities in administering government funding, proposals and program reporting is a plus
  • Strong understanding of cash management, expenditure processes and controls
  • Knowledge of payroll processing and procedures, T4 and benefits reporting
  • Experience in the audit process and capable of delivering audit requirements
  • Capable of operating accounting software at a highly proficient level – familiarity with Xyntax is preferred, experience with Accpac, Quickbooks or Sage is sufficient
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Powerpoint
  • Able to ensure the First Nation complies with Federal Labour Law, Privacy Law, Employment Standards, Occupational Health and Safety and Human Rights
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, knowledge of Cree language is a plus
  • Has team building, supervisory and leadership skills, demonstrates sound work ethics
  • Strives for professional excellence in fulfilling their role with skill, honesty, care and diligence
