Public Works

Public works covers a broad spectrum of service activities essential to the smooth operation and protection of the community. Public Works duties include; fire service protection, maintaining, repairing and coordinates replacement of the infrastructure in Mistawasis. Currently public works oversees 115 km of roads including trails and driveways, 18 community buildings, pow wow grounds, rodeo grounds, camp big child, 5 Water treatment plants, 5 underground water distribution system, underground waste water systems, sewage pumping station, sewage lagoon, 112 septic systems, 17 individual lagoons, 32 cisterns, 9 community wells, community transfer station, fueling facility, fire protection, emergency planning and outdoor rink.

Public Works has a staff of 10 plus contractors and casual employees to deliver the service program in the community. Water delivery is scheduled for Monday, Wednesday & Friday, 5 water treatment plans operate 24/7 daily, sewage pump outs are scheduled for 7 days a week , house hold garbage collection is scheduled for Tuesday & Thursday plus semi-annual community clean up, transfer station operation schedule is from Monday to Friday, janitorial service is scheduled 5 days a week except holidays, public buildings are scheduled for semi-annual maintenance and emergency repairs as and when required, public facilities such as community grounds, sports field, pow wow grounds, rodeo grounds, seniors and members with disabilities yards are maintained on scheduled bases. Maintenance of roads includes grading all roads, debris removal, cutting grass in ditches, gravelling, repairing roads as and when required. Community hazardous household waste removal is scheduled annually and it is anticipated recycling program be implemented in the near future.

To meet community public service mandate requirements public works require the following equipment; water truck with 4000 gallon water tank, garbage truck, 2 sewer truck, dump truck, semi-tractor with end dump and belly dump, loader, back hoe, grader, skid steer with attachments, fire truck, case tractor with ditch mow, 2 riding lawn mowers and a number of small tools.
